At half past six I put my book down and made my way downstairs to the garden for the July 4th celebrations. You may ask yourself what a small town in eastern Germany is doing celebrating American Independence Day. Well, a lot of the people at the Jesus Haus are American and what with it being the end of the English course we thought it highly appropriate to gather together all English speaking people whether they be American, British, Canadian or German, and celebrate Independence Day. There was a short play directed by the German Pastor and his British wife’s 12 year old, and bi-lingual, daughter, which ended with the singing of both the American and British national anthems. This was followed by American hotdogs and roasted marshmallows and yep, you guessed it – cake!! We may have been celebrating American Independence but we were, nevertheless in Germany, and the Germans cannot, it seems, do anything without cake! The cake was gigantic and resembled the American flag. Afterwards there was the chance to mingle. I was talking to Corrie, an American girl, who was explaining to Beata, in a mixture of German and English, exactly what her job is. This is how I picked up the words ‘Mitarbeiter’ and ‘Studentin’. I also spoke to the students who had come and met a few other people too. All in all it was a very enjoyable and pleasurable evening.
