Coffee and Cake

It seems to me, that after 5 full days of life in Germany, that the Germans are a coffee-drinking, cake-obsessed nation. If it's not the once a month Sunday morning coffee and cake then it's the once a week Thursday afternoon cake and coffee. And well, if you get coffee and cake cravings inbetween there's always the morning cake and coffee served by Jenny and Jannik and, if that's not enough, then don't worry - there's a cake and coffee afternoon around the baker's house. So, never fear: in this quiet, secluded part of Germany, that is about as far away from being taken over by tourists as Gordon Brown is from becoming the British people's favourite person, you are never a few hours away from coffee and cake. And when I say cake I mean cake. We're talking serious cake here. Not your Tesco's finest or your Mr Kipling, not even your De Grey's freshly baked, but proper German cake. Biscuits, fruit bread, eclairs, sponges with cream and icing and fruit, cheese cakes, custard creams - you name it they have it. A huge cake selection available, well, virtually 24/7. No wonder this tiny little village of 2 streets can warrant having two flourrishing bakeries! One alone would never be able to cope with the cake demand!
